Casa Cayuco is an off-grid, remote eco-adventure lodge on Isla Bastimentos in Bocas del Toro, Panama, designed for travelers who want to truly get away. The lodge is powered by solar energy, with rain-harvested water that’s stored and purified on-site. Nestled between the jungle and the sea, this low-impact hideaway blends open-air living, curated nature adventures, and a strong commitment to community partnership — especially with the nearby Ngäbe-Buglé indigenous village of Salt Creek (Quebrada Sal).

Casa Cayuco has recently been recognized among the world’s leading family-friendly and small & boutique hotels:

#1 Family-Friendly Hotel in the World
#3 Small & Boutique Hotel in Central America
#23 Small & Boutique Hotel in the World

These recognitions reflect what makes Casa Cayuco so special: an extraordinary family-friendly experience, a truly distinctive small-lodge atmosphere, and a deep connection to nature, adventure, and community.

This is the kind of place where nature isn’t a “view” — it’s the whole atmosphere. You’re just steps from the beach, close to island trails, and only a short ride from some of the archipelago’s most iconic spots. The lodge’s team of local, expert guides helps shape each day around the experiences that matter most to you, while the lodge itself keeps things grounded in simplicity, comfort, and care.

What the Stay Feels Like

The Casa Cayuco Eco-Adventure Lodge experience is barefoot, restorative, and adventure-forward — with a calm, intentional rhythm. Accommodations are designed in an open-air style, giving you “the sense of being outside”, and each stay has its own feel: spaces may be nestled in the jungle, up in the trees, adjoined to the main lodge, or overlooking the water.

All cabins and suites are designed using biomimicry principles, blending seamlessly into the jungle canopy to promote natural airflow and a deep connection to the environment. These spaces offer practical comforts that make open-air living easy: an en-suite open-air bathroom, organic coconut soap and haircare products, a high-powered ceiling fan, memory foam mattress, high thread count sheets, mosquito net, and high-speed wifi.

Looking ahead, the lodge is expanding its commitment to sustainable architecture with the addition of new beachfront one and two bedroom bungalows, arriving in 2027. These cabins will be constructed with responsibly harvested bamboo and innovative ‘cococrete’ roofs — a blend of coconut husks from the island, concrete, and lime — waterproofed with a sealer derived from recycled car tires.

Food is part of the lodge’s low-impact philosophy. Casa Cayuco dining is plant-focused, with the exception of fresh fish caught by local fisherman in the waters around the property. The lodge states guests enjoy three daily meals, an afternoon snack, and three-course dinners, and that all meals are included with the stay.
After a day out in the archipelago, you can slow down even further with massage therapy from the in-house therapist, listening to the rainforest as your soundtrack.

Community & Local Connection

Their closest partnership is with Salt Creek (Quebrada Sal), a Ngäbe-Buglé indigenous village located about 30 minutes by foot from the lodge and described as one of the largest and most remote Ngäbe villages in the Bocas del Toro archipelago.

The lodge shares that roughly 900 people live in Salt Creek, with over 250 students aged 5 to 15. Casa Cayuco also states it employs 28 people from Salt Creek, who support over 200 people in the village — and that a portion of every stay goes toward projects in the community.

A current highlight is the two-story Salt Creek Medical Outpost, now open and operated by Floating Doctors, hosting regular clinics each month. Casa Cayuco says it is continuing to support the outpost by installing a full solar power system and adding essential medical equipment and supplies.

What to Do Nearby (and how to explore responsibly)
