24.09 °C, few clouds, Cloudiness 18%, Wind speed : 3.95 km/hkizikula is a thoughtful place to stay on the remote south-west coast of Zanzibar, set on a permaculture farm overlooking the Indian Ocean. Located in Kizimkazi Dimbani (Unguja South, Tanzania), this nineteen-room property was created as a personal project by two childhood friends, one with Zanzibari roots, who grew up in Dubai and dreamed of building a home base in Zanzibar. Decades after first buying land on the sleepy coast of Kizimkazi, they’ve created a thoughtful collection of humble guest houses alongside a pool, restaurant, and shared spaces.
The concept is intentionally intimate and communal: a place designed to feel like a shared home, with ample spaces to meet your neighbours and just enough privacy to stay connected to the surrounding nature. Beyond the simple, personal dwellings, kizikula is shaped by the founders’ influences across music, art, literature, and film, with food and body practices playing an important role in the experience.
What the Stay Feels Like
kizikula feels calm, design-led, and quietly social. The setting is remote and rugged, with sea views over the Indian Ocean and a layout that encourages slow days and easy connection. Shared spaces are part of the rhythm here: sea-facing moments by the pool and bar at sunset, and spacious rooftops accessible throughout the property for taking in Zanzibar’s starry nights.
Wellness is woven into the atmosphere through pavilions designed with yoga, meditation, and Movnat-inspired practices in mind. The pace is unhurried and grounded, shaped by the coast, the farm, and the idea of living simply in a place that feels personal rather than crowded. The overall architecture stays true to the original concept, while Phase 2 introduces more spacious rooms and a few updated interior elements, without losing the calm, communal-home feeling. Phase 2 is now fully operational and adds its own pool and pavilion, plus a new family unit designed for shared stays. This unit includes communal spaces such as a kitchen and dining area, an upstairs living room, and private terraces for both the shared areas and the rooms themselves.
Designed to suit both group and individual stays, Phase 2 brings rooms closer together and creates more interactive shared spaces.
Phase 2 also adds a unique permaculture system designed to support the land around the lodge, including a biogas and evapotranspiration setup that handles waste safely and hygienically. It’s part of a longer-term move toward a more self-sustainable way of operating, with expanded use of solar energy for water heating and electricity.
Community & Local Connection
Food at kizikula is built around local cultures and produce, with ingredients sourced with care from farms and producers in Tanzania and Zanzibar. The on-site permaculture farm grows herbs, vegetables, and fruit, and the kitchen also uses eggs from free range chicken and goat’s milk from the property’s own goats.
Additional sourcing includes seasonal produce from Masifio Farm in the southern highlands of Tanzania, seasonal fruit, vegetables, and free range chicken from Pakacha / Msonge Organic Farm in Zanzibar, local seasonal vegetables and herbs from Jozani Farms, cashews from YYTZ, coffees from roasteries in Tanzania including Atom, Asili, and Puzzle, cocoa from bean to bar, and teas from the Tanzania Tea Collection.
What to Do Nearby and How to Explore Responsibly

Spend unhurried time in the shared spaces — the stay is intentionally designed to encourage connection, conversation, and a more communal style of travel
Take time to disconnect — this is a place best experienced slowly, with fewer plans and more attention to the surrounding nature, ocean, and local rhythms
